Back when i first started on my photographic journey i promised my selfi would never use photoshop, i would be a purist and only share the images as they were captured. I would have used the hashtag #nofilter regularly. I was happy and satisfied. for a time. then i started to get underexposed landscapes at golden hour, or dark subjects because I wasn’t using Fill Flash etc.
It was only after a good friend commented saying that the changes didn’t have to be about unrealistic portraits, really smooth skin and over saturated colours or over exposed days. Instead it could take the existing image and add punch, contrast and vibrance.
The example below is taken straight from the camera with no post processing. While its captured the light reflecting from the building it appears flat and dull. there is no warmth to the golden colour, the sky is underexposed, the highlights in the centre are close to being blown out and a few ither minor issues.
This is the same image processed in Adobe Lightroom. a syou can see the highlights have been adjusted and detail recovered, the golden glow has more warmth and the sky is vibrant and blue. in addition i’ve deepened the shadows in the passage way areas that add nothing of value to the image while still retaining the leading lines into the subject.
