Club Photographer of the Year

First round of this seasons Club Photographer of the year was fantastic. Such a wide variety of images and some superb creativity by everyone.

This year I will be competing in the Advanced member section, I am apprehensive because the quality of imagery put forward by others in this section is outstanding. to say I feel somewhat intimidated is an understatement. That said it does provide a yard stick to measure myself against and an incentive ti get more creative as I make more photos.

The first round was an open themed digital image round, each image is reviewed and awarded a score by a visiting photographer. My images were second last to be judged and after seeing those that came before me I was feeling like I hadn’t delivered. But I was surprised by my result.

The first imaged of the Music Man scored 18. the feedback being it could do with a little more light in the eyes and a slightly closer crop. Given this image was made as i walked past this gentleman with no time to pose, consider lighting or add fill flash while in Eastern Europe, I’ll take that.

The second image of the New Shoes scored top marks of 20. the feed back was that it was a different and bold image and definitely out of the box. I’m delighted with this result and it has me thinking more about simple setups and styles like this.

The final image, A Brief Encounter scored 19. most feedback was about the colouring and the use of the triangle between the subjects. the image itself is not posed and was taken looking down on an escalator at a local shopping mall, it was a chance encounter and something I’d probably never be able to recreate unless it were posed. But its good to see what I’d consider a Street Photo getting such a high mark.

Overall I placed joint second so off to a very encouraging start of the year.
