Poolbeg Lighthouse, Dublin

Poolbeg lighthouse is situated at the end of the Great South Wall in Dublin bay. The construction of the wall began in 1716.and was then known as ‘The Piles’, construction completed around 1730. At the time it was regarded as a considerable engineering achievement. Standing at an impressive 3 miles long it was the world’s longest sea wall.

The now-iconic Poolbeg Lighthouse was built in 1768 and initially operated on candlepower and was the first lighthouse in the world to do so. It later changed to oil (in 1786) and the lighthouse itself was redesigned and rebuilt again in 1820.

Today it stands 4KM out into Dublin bay and offers fantastic views of both North and South Dublin, Howth and Poolbeg PowerStation, itself another icon of the dublin skyline.

As someone that always yearns for home when i travel, for me it is a symbol of home and I always relish seeing it as i fly or sail back into Dublin because then i know my journey has ended.
